In Scotland, the families listed below had a close relationship to the Sinclairs and as such were under their protection. They are, therefore, eligible to belong to the Clan Sinclair Association Inc. (USA).
   Over the centuries some of these names have evolved with different spellings than shown, ie. Beus(Bewes), Bolte(Bolt), Croft(Crofts), Hamlin(Hamlyn), Odde(Oddey) etc. Many immigrants to the new world could neither read nor write, so they were at the mercy of those who could, to write the names as they heard them.
